32 Years Later: Argentine Finds Peace After Killer's Death

Thirty-two years ago, on February 17, 1994, the 'Flores Massacre' occurred in Buenos Aires. Spanish national Fructuoso Álvarez González set fire to a house on Baldomero Fernández street, 1906, due to a debt of $180,000 he claimed. The fire killed five people: Alicia Plaza and José Bagnato (40 and 42 years old), their sons Fernando (14) and Alejandro (9), and a family friend, Nicolás Borda (11). The sole survivor was Matías Bagnato, who was absent from home at the time, having traveled to the seaside city of Mar del Plata. After the tragedy, Matías went to live with his grandmother, Norma Calzaretta, and began to seek justice for his family. The killer, a native of Asturias, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1995 but was extradited to Spain in 2004 to serve his sentence. In 2011, he was recaptured in Argentina after repeated threats against Matías Bagnato. From that moment on, he was held at the Ezeiza prison. Fructuoso Álvarez González died on April 30, 2023, at the age of 63, from a generalized infection that complicated a hip replacement surgery. In response to the news of the killer's death, Matías Bagnato posted on social media: 'Today, at last, I can say it's over. Mom, Dad, Fer, Ale, Nico, rest in peace.'
